Platycerium bifurcatum is a striking epiphytic fern with distinctive frond morphology. It features two types of fronds: heart-shaped sterile fronds (12-45 cm long) that form a basal shield to collect water and nutrients, and arching grey-green fertile fronds (up to 90 cm long) that are forked and strap-shaped, resembling antlers. This rainforest species grows in aggregations where individual plants may specialize in water absorption or detritus collection, potentially demonstrating an incipient form of eusociality through resource sharing. Its unique growth habit and architectural form make it a popular ornamental specimen.
