The leaves display deep purple undersides and emerge with pinkish-red undersides when new. Its foliage grows from a horizontal rhizome and exhibits nyctinastic movement - leaves rise and close at night before reopening at dawn. This characteristic, combined with its striking leaf patterns, makes it a popular ornamental houseplant.
